Your Recovery Key is a critical emergency backup that allows you to regain access to your Password Boss WebApp account if you forget your Master Password. This guide explains how to retrieve it, how to store it safely, and what to expect when using it.

What the Recovery Key Is

The Recovery Key is a securely generated PDF file that contains your encrypted recovery code and instructions for resetting your Master Password.

If you forget your Master Password, the Recovery Key allows you to reset it without losing any stored data.
Without a valid Recovery Key, a forgotten Master Password will result in permanent, irreversible data loss.

How to Retrieve Your Recovery Key

Follow these steps to download your Recovery Key PDF:

  1. Log in to the Password Boss WebApp at https://app.passwordboss.com.
  2. Open the Menu → Settings.
  3. Select Security.
  4. Choose Get Recovery Code.
  5. Enter your Master Password when prompted.
  6. When the Recovery Key window appears, select Download PDF.
  7. Save the PDF in a secure location such as:
    • An encrypted external drive
    • A secure cloud storage folder
    • An offline personal vault

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

How to Use the Recovery Key

Your Recovery PDF contains detailed instructions, but the general steps are:

  1. Go to the WebApp login screen.
  2. Select Recover Account.
  3. Upload your Recovery PDF.
  4. Follow the prompts to create a new Master Password.
  5. Log in with your newly created Master Password.
The Recovery Key is only used for resetting a forgotten Master Password.

Best Practices for Storing Your Recovery Key

  • Keep at least two copies stored in different secure locations.
  • Avoid cloud storage unless it is encrypted and access-controlled.
  • If your personal information changes (email, legal name), regenerate a new Recovery PDF.
  • Business users should follow internal compliance policies for credential recovery.

Troubleshooting

You downloaded the wrong PDF

Download a fresh Recovery Key from the WebApp.

Validation Error

To improve account protection, the WebApp now verifies whether the Recovery Key PDF matches your account.
If you attempt to upload a Recovery Key PDF that belongs to someone else, you will see this message:

“This recovery file does not belong to this account.”
If this appears:
  • Confirm you are signed in with the correct email address.
  • Ensure you are using the correct Recovery Key PDF.
  • Download a new Recovery Key if needed.

The Recovery Key does not load

  • Ensure the PDF is not corrupted.
  • Confirm the file belongs to your account.
  • Try re-downloading a new Recovery PDF.

You lost your Recovery Key

If your Recovery PDF is lost and you forget your Master Password, the only option is to reset your account, resulting in permanent data loss.

Summary

  • The Recovery Key enables secure Master Password resets.
  • You must download and store the PDF securely.
  • The WebApp now warns if the Recovery Key is from another account.
  • Losing the Recovery Key means losing access to your stored data permanently.
